Copying a project is a great time saver and ensures that your organization's standards are
maintained from one project to the other. By creating
projects from templates, it is guaranteed that project
managers create their projects from a standardized
source. Furthermore, the parent/child relationship lets you
link a project template with one or several child
projects. Hence, whenever a structure change (task
groups, types, statuses and priorities) is applied to
the parent project, all its child projects are updated
accordingly. This ensures data integrity is preserved.
Active vs. Inactive Templates
A project template can be marked as active
or inactive. An active template is a project you can use as both a template and a project to work with. Its entire structure can be copied. Its tasks are displayed in task lists, such as "My Tasks".
On the other hand, an inactive template is a project you can only use as a template. Its entire structure can be copied. However, it cannot be used to work with as its tasks are not displayed in task lists, such as "My Tasks". No email notification is sent for inactive templates.
Items that can be copied include:
- Project assignments
- Project documents
- Discussion forum topics
- Tasks
* When a project template is copied, the "Contact",
"Dependencies", "Settings" and "Default Values"
information is carried over into the new project.
