There is indeed no way to create a task without creating a project beforehand. The task creating procedure is as follows:
1) Create a project
2) Select the project
3) Create a task
This procedure automatically creates the task within the active (selected) project. For faster task creation, you might like to try out the «Quick Action» feature available through «My Office --> My Tasks».
