Contextual Help - Dependencies Tab (Edit Task Information)
The Dependencies tab is used to create predecessors and successors to a task, so that the tasks are accomplished in a pre-defined sequential order.

This window has 2 parts: a title bar and the navigation tabs.

  • The title bar tells you where you are in AceProject. At the end of the title bar you will find links to the contextual help, to add a new task, to open or close an IN/OUT work item, to move/copy a task, and to a printer-friendly version of the page.
  • The Task tab displays the main task information.
  • The Assignment tab shows which users are assigned or reviewers on the task.
  • The File Attachments tab shows all files that are attached to this task. Attachments can be documents, screen captures or any other file format.
  • The Dependencies tab displays all relationships between this task and other tasks in that project.
    • This tab is divided in 4 groups: Project, Predecessors, Successors and Add a New Predecessor Link.
    • The "Project" group lets you know in which project the task belongs to.
    • The "Predecessor(s)" group lists all predecessor tasks to the actual task. You can delete predecessors by checking their box and clicking "Delete Checked item(s)".
    • The "Successor(s)" group lists all successor tasks to the actual task. You can delete successors by checking their box and by clicking the "Delete Checked item(s)" button.
    • The Add a New Predecessor Link lets you create a dependency between the actual task and another task in the project.
      • Choose the task that will be the predecessor from the "Predecessor Task" drop-down list.
        • A task cannot be linked with itself.
        • You cannot link a task's successor as a predecessor.
        • You cannot link a task that is a successor to any of its successors.
      • Choose the Dependency Type from the corresponding drop-down list.
      • Enter a lag time if required in the corresponding field.
        • Lag time is expressed in day hours and NOT work hours. For example, 24 hours in lag time will last from Monday 8 AM to Tuesday 8 AM.
        • Lag time must be a positive value.
      • Click the "Create Predecessor" button to add the new dependency to the task or click the down arrow to expand a drop-down list that will let you perform the following actions:
        • "Create Pred. + Edit Task" lets you save your changes and reach the "Task" tab.
        • "Create Pred. + Assign Users" lets you save your changes and reach the "Assignment" tab.
        • "Create Pred. + Attach Files" lets you save your changes and reach the "File Attachment(s)" tab.
        • "Create Pred. + View History" lets you save your changes and reach the "History Trail" tab.
        • "Create Pred. + Go to Previous Task" lets you save your changes and open the previous task in the list.
        • "Create Pred. + Go to Next Task" lets you save your changes and open the next task in the list.
    • For more information on task dependencies, click here.
  • The History Trail tab displays all changes that have been performed on the task since it's been created.
  • The Prev. Task link lets you open the previous task in the list.
  • The Next Task link lets you open the next task in the list.

What is a task dependency?
In most projects, certain tasks cannot begin unless another is completed. This can be difficult to manage when the project is complex and contains a high number of tasks that depend on the successful completion of others. These complex projects demand structure and AceProject has the perfect solution.

This is where task dependencies come in. Task dependencies let you decide when a task can be started. For example, testing on a software bundle can only start after building the application file is completed. With AceProject, you can specify that a certain task can only start after one or several other tasks are completed.

How do I add a task dependency?
To add a task dependency, click the "Create Predecessor" button to add the new dependency to the task or click the down arrow to expand a drop-down list that will let you perform the following actions:
