Contextual Help - Project Gantt Chart

The Project Gantt Chart shows the progress for each task in the actual project. Three views are available for project Gantt charts: daily, weekly and monthly.

This window has 3 parts: the title bar, the search bar, and the Gantt chart itself.

  • The title bar tells you where you are in AceProject.
    • The title bar displays the total number of tasks that fit the chosen search criteria.
    • The "Add a Task" link lets you create a new task within the actual project.
    • The Show/Hide Columns link opens a window that allows you to decide which columns will be displayed in the Gantt chart. Note that this option will set columns for all other task Gantt charts you are allowed to view.
    • The "Help" link lets you reach the contextual help page that is related to the current page.
  • The search bar lets you filter which tasks to display. You may select the search criteria you need and click the "Apply Filter" button.
  • By default, the Gantt chart shows all tasks over a 14-day, 12-week or 12-month period.
    • The number of days, weeks and months displayed on this page can be set under "My Office -> My Preferences".
    • The number of tasks displayed on this page can be set under "My Office -> My Preferences".
    • You can move back and forth in time by using the date navigation bar.
      • You can jump to a specific month/year thanks to the corresponding drop-downs next to the navigation bar.
    • You can sort your tasks by start or due date. Simple click the links above the chart and AceProject will rearrange the chart accordingly.
    • Simply position the mouse pointer over a progress bar to see more information about the task
    • The list of tasks is displayed right before the Gantt chart.
    • You can click a task's summary to open it.
      • If there is a file icon next to the task summary (), this means there are file(s) attached to the task. Click the file number to open the task's file attachment tab.
      • If there is a dependency icon next to the task summary (, or ), this means that the task is linked with other tasks.
        • When tasks are linked together with a dependency, their respective progress bars are linked with a dotted line.
    • Click on any column header in the task list to sort it: click once to sort in ascending order and twice to sort in descending order.
    • The Gantt chart will remember your filters and sort parameter as you move back and forth in time.
    • To print the Gantt chart or save it as an image, simply right-click it and select the corresponding option.
      • The saved image's width cannot exceed 2880 pixels. If the chart is wider, it will be cut accordingly.
      • The Gantt chart's width, in Flash format, cannot exceed 4000 pixels.

What is a Gantt chart?
Gantt charts are a project planning tool used to represent the timing of tasks required to complete a project. Because Gantt charts are simple to understand, they are used by most project managers to illustrate completion or progress.

In a Gantt chart, each task takes up one row. Dates run along the top. The expected time for each task is represented by a horizontal bar: the left end represents the beginning of the tasks, while the right end show its expected date of completion. As the project progresses and tasks become partially done or completed, the color of the horizontal bars will change to reflect completion or percentage of completion.

How can I see all my tasks in this chart, without having to browse numerous pages?
The number of tasks displayed on each page of the Gantt chart can be set under "My Office -> My Preferences". To see all tasks on one page in the Gantt chart, click the "My Office" tab, then click on "My Preferences" on the left panel. In "My Preferences", you can select to display up to 100 tasks per page. Simply click on the "Update" button to enable your changes and return to your Gantt chart.

Why is my progress bar only grey? Why is my progress bar only red?
The progress bar will change from grey to red as the task becomes partially or totally completed. A task that is not started will be marked as 0% done. Its progress bar will be completely grey. A task that is completed will be marked as 100% done, or that has its status as completed, its progress bar will be completely red. Other tasks will be partly grey and partly red, proportional to the percentage of completion.

Some tasks have no progress bar. Why?
There are 2 important requirements for a task to have a progress bar in the Gantt chart: it must have a start date AND an end date. If your task only has a start date or only has an end date, it will not have a progress bar.

If your task has both a start and an end date, but you still cannot see its progress bar in the Gantt chart, it may be that its time frame is set in another month. Simply click on the arrows next to the month to move back or forward in time.

How do I add a task?
To add a task, click the "Add a task" link at the upper right. Then, fill out the mandatory fields and click the "Save" button.  You must have the proper access rights to perform this operation.
